Holiday Celebration
Small Business Saturday Success
A huge thank you to all the local businesses and consumers in the region for helping make Small Business Saturday the biggest ever. Awareness of the event rose from 67% to 71%. Of those who were aware, 46% said they participated by shopping locally. Consumers spent $5.7 billion with independent merchants this year-3.6% more than last year.

On behalf of all of our local retailers, please continue to shop local this holiday season.

Illinois General Assembly Passes Pension Reform
Last week, the Illinois General Assembly approved sweeping reforms to the state’s public employee pension system when both houses adopted Conference Committee Report #1 to Senate Bill 1. On Thursday, Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill into law.

Moody’s said the Illinois is “probably the largest pension reform package seen in any state so far, a $21 billion reduction,” according to Crain’s Chicago Business. “Next closest is New Jersey, which eliminated cost-of-living allowances rather than modify them as Illinois did, cutting its pension debt by nearly $18.5 billion.”

The Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce has worked with several other business associations over the last several years to support changes to the state’s pension system that will get the state back on track and focused on policies that will improve the state’s business climate and create jobs.

After lengthy debate in the Illinois House and Senate, both passed the legislation on votes of 62-53 (House) and 30-24 (Senate). The reforms are estimated to save the nearly $160 billion over 30 years.

Fox Valley United Way Requests Holiday Support
With the holiday season just around the corner, Fox Valley United Way is once again partnering with local businesses, community and student groups, along with families and individuals who are interested in helping those that are experiencing difficulties during these tough economic times.

While countless parents are telling their children that there will not be many gifts under the tree this year, a large number of children in our community will not be receiving any presents. The Fox Valley United Way wants to give to those families in need, who do not have the financial means to provide gifts for their children this year.

You can help by donating to the Fox Valley United Way Holiday Assistance fund. Your financial gift will be used to purchase clothes, toys, hats, mittens and scarves for the children. If donations allow, we will also buy each family a gift card to a local grocery store, so they can enjoy a family holiday meal!

Below are some ways you can make a difference this holiday season:

  • Sponsor an individual child or family. We will send you detailed information about a family in need this holiday season and you purchase gifts for each child in that family. For more information about a sponsorship, please contact Deborah at deborah.collins@uwfoxvalley.org.
  • Provide a monetary donation. All donations can be mailed to or presented at the following address: Fox Valley United Way, 44 East Galena Blvd., Aurora, IL 60505. If processing a donation by credit card is preferred, please visit www.uwfoxvalley.org.
  • Purchase a gift card.By purchasing a gift card from a local grocery store, you can provide a holiday meal for a family in need.
  • Organize a community drive to collect specific items. Basic needs items that are always in shortage are scarves, hats, and mittens (or gloves). Another beneficial drive encouraged is collecting toys for children. All basic needs items, toys and other gifts can be dropped off at the Fox Valley United Way office.

Please note that all gifts should be unwrapped and donations of any size appreciated. Deadline to drop off donations, at the Fox Valley United Way office, is Friday, December 13th.

Kane County Toys for Tots – Donate Today
Founded by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in 1947, the Toys for Totsprogram is the largest toy drive in the nation and sends a message of hope to the less fortunate children of our communities each year. How can you help? It’s very simple and easy:

  • Become a Toy Drop Site:If you are a business or organization, Kane County Toys for Tots will provide you with collection boxes and posters, and pick up your toys.
  • Donate Toys: Drop off your new, unwrapped toys at our distribution warehouse or at any approved drop site. A list of approved sites is listed online at http://batavia-il.toysfortots.org. Please no stuffed animals or gun-like toys.
  • Host an Event to Collect Toys:Designate your corporate Holiday Party as a philanthropy event for Toys for Tots.
  • Send your Donation: You can still help by making a tax deductible donation, either via check (made payable to “Toys for Tots”) mailed to Kane County Toys for Tots’ office or online at http://batavia-il.toysfortots.org.
