This Week, We Celebrate #GivingTuesday
Giving Tuesday

In our community, there are numerous organizations that provide services to our region’s more vulnerable – from housing to hunger solutions, from healthcare to education. In fact, more than 80 of your fellow Aurora Chamber members are working to solve the concerns and improve the conditions many area residents face every day.

#GivingTuesday is the day when millions around the world donate to causes and organizations that are important to them. Surely in that list of fellow members, there are causes you support and organizations that could use assistance.

Tomorrow, the Aurora Chamber applauds those organizations working to improve our great region. Many of those organizations are participating through the #ILGive portal and are eligible to double and in some cases triple your contribution during #GivingTuesday.

Please join us tomorrow by supporting these wonderful organizations. No gift is too small and together we can help them help our region. You can click here https://www.ilgive.com/organizations and search by organization name, location, or even cause.

Thank you.

Holiday Express Lights up Blackberry Farm in December – Eight Days in All

Monday, November 27th, 2017

The Holiday Express train is welcoming all aboard during the first three weekends in December at Blackberry Farm for its Yuletide celebration, with thousands of glittering lights, festive activities throughout and the jolly presence of Santa and his elves.

For eight days in December, the holiday spirit comes to life on Dec. 2-3, Dec. 8-10 and Dec. 15-17, when the decorated train will run continuously around sparkling Lake Gregory. Friday hours are 5 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 8 and 15; Saturday and Sunday hours for all other dates are 2 to 6 p.m.

Advance tickets for specific dates are available online at foxvalleyparkdistrict.org and the Blackberry Farm Facebook events page to purchase tickets for specific dates. Please note the weekend of Dec. 2-3 is sold out.

More than 60,000 Christmas lights (3½ miles worth) will illuminate the sparkling pioneer village, with shooting stars flashing above Blackberry Creek and holiday cartoon characters (Frosty, etc.) gracing the tour of Lake Gregory.

“Thousands and thousands of twinkling lights – from the ticket window to the train depot and all along the walkways – turn Blackberry Farm into a winter wonderland,” said facility supervisor Sandie Gilmer. “It’s a holiday spectacle to be experienced, and a truly memorable outing.”

Santa and his elves will be at Blackberry Farm each weekend, collecting children’s wish lists at the Early Streets Museum. There’s a sleigh full of other activities, including:

  • Huntoon House: See what a Victorian Christmas looks like – from décor to small antique toy displays
  • Reindeer Food Bar: Mix up a snack bag and take it home to treat Santa’s reindeer on Christmas Eve
  • North Pole Oasis (Carriage Museum): Enjoy crafts, music and a full menu of concessions available for purchase
  • Candy Cane Village (Adventure Playground): Festively decorated and lit; the kids will love it!
  • Little Elf Hobby Shoppe (Weaver’s Cabin): Create a commemorative bird feeder to help your feathered friends celebrate the holidays
  • Sugar Plum Play Land: Enjoy winter-themed sensory tables and dive into the corn crib
  • Gingerbread School House: Classic holiday stories read alongside the warmth of a wood-burning stove
  • North Pole Barn: Visit Olivia, the friendly Potbelly Pig, as she helps Santa’s reindeer get in shape for Christmas
  • Reindeer Training Facility (Pony Ring): See the ponies demonstrate what it takes to become a sled-pulling reindeer

Special activities are scheduled each weekend as well:

  • Dec. 3: Olaf Meet and Greet (sold out)
  • Dec. 9: Stories with Mrs. Claus
  • Dec. 16: The World’s Tallest Toy Soldier

The Adventure Playground will be decorated and ready for action. Visitors can also enjoy hay wagon rides while being entertained by carolers and storytellers. Also, volunteer carolers (individual and group) are welcome; call 630-897-1550 to schedule.

Advance tickets can be purchased online for all Holiday Express dates except Dec. 2 and 3, which are sold out. Concessions are available on-site, as well. View menu here.

All-access admission to Holiday Express is just $5 per person (children under 2 free). Blackberry Farm is located at 100 S. Barnes Road in Aurora, just south of Galena Boulevard about one half mile west of Orchard Road. For more information, call 630-892-1550.

‘Give Your Brand a Hand’

Monday, November 27th, 2017

It’s not every day that small businesses are given a fair shot at taking their brand to the next level, especially in the launch phase of their business, but one local company is changing that problem.

Quality Logo Products, a promotional products company based in Aurora, offers a monthly Give Your Brand a Hand giveaway in which they select one lucky small business or non-profit organization to donate $500 worth of promotional products to, free of charge. Quality Logo Products started as a small business more than 10 years ago, so they’re all too familiar with how difficult it can be to find an affordable marketing solution.

“There are stories within the small business and non-profit ecosystem, and we started Give Your Brand a Hand to tell those stories through promotional products,” said Jennifer Wolanik, director of marketing. “Since we started as a small business ourselves, being able to witness these companies grow their brand in a way they never thought was possible is so rewarding.”

In honor of Small Business Saturday, Quality Logo Products is doubling their efforts by selecting two lucky winners for the month of November. The giveaway is timelier than ever, with around 100 Aurora-based businesses participating in Small Business Saturday this year alone. ͞Small Business Saturday has a lot of free nationwide marketing behind it. It would be prudent of every small business owners to take advantage of this once a year opportunity offers by entering to win $500 in free promotional products,͟ said President and Co-Founder Bret Bonnet.

Though Quality Logo Products is a local business, the giveaway is not exclusive to the Aurora community. For example, The Ragbaby Exchange, a small non-profit based out of Washington, D.C., was able to reach hundreds more people and focus their funding on certifications that come with the program. When a small business is able to focus on its goals and worry less about marketing or making ends meet, they are able to achieve significant growth as a company. Even one small contribution can make a huge difference.

In order to qualify, entrants must make less than $1 million per year, have fewer than 50 employees, and they cannot already be a customer of Quality Logo Products. To enter, business owners simply need to head over to the signup form, read the contest rules, and click submit.

Registration for FVPD Winter Programs Begins Nov. 18

Tuesday, November 14th, 2017

Residents of the Fox Valley Park District may register for winter programs and events beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18.

To register, each household must set up an account in Foxlink. Once the account is established, there’s no need to visit a facility to register; the upgraded system provides each user with the ability to manage registration and payment info exclusively online.

Registrants can also view and track activity schedules for each family member and access information on rental availability at various facilities and parks.

Fox Valley Park District is offering hundreds of programs and activities for youth, adults and seniors, ranging from sports to nature programs to performing arts and expanded offerings of health, wellness and fitness programs. For a complete listing, the Winter 2017-18 Activity Guide is available at all community centers and accessible online at www.foxvalleyparkdistrict.org.

Registration is taken in one of three ways:

  • Foxlink Internet: Allows convenient registration from anywhere, 24/7. Visit www.foxvalleyparkdistrict.org, click the Foxlink tab and establish your household account. Residency status will be verified by Geographic Information Systems – no need to visit a facility to show proof.
  • Mail-in: Fill out a registration form and mail to FVPD, 150 W. Illinois Ave., Aurora, IL 60506. Make checks payable to Fox Valley Park District.

For resident families and individuals who are approved for the Park District’s scholarship program, registration is available on Saturday in-person at the community centers and beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, at the Cole Center (101 W. Illinois Ave. in Aurora).

Non-resident registration will begin the following week on Monday, Nov. 27. All registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and must be accompanied by payment.

Ill. Veterans to be Honored, Recognized

Sunday, November 12th, 2017

Illinois’ Bicentennial Campaign will honor 200 Illinois Veterans. Governor Bruce Rauner and Department of Veterans Affairs Director Erica Jeffries have announced the launch of HONOR 200, a signature program of the Illinois Bicentennial Celebration, honoring the work of 200 veterans whose contributions are above and beyond the call of duty.

“Illinois veterans have played a critical role in defining our heritage,” Governor Rauner said. “They’ve served our country, protected our freedoms, and many of them continue to be a positive force in their communities. It’s only fitting that we honor them and recognize their contributions to society.”

“It is a very special privilege to honor our veterans,” IDVA Director Jeffries said. “Honor 200 provides us with an opportunity to showcase our veterans and the values they have when it comes to serving our communities.”

The IDVA will work with veteran’s organizations throughout the state to promote HONOR 200 and solicit nominations for those who will be recognized as part of the program. Nominees will be evaluated on their achievements and on the extent to which their contributions have aided, benefited and provided inspiration to their community. Anyone can nominate an Illinois Veteran. Written nominations can be sent to the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, 69 W. Washington Street, Chicago, IL 60601 or on-line at www.illinois.gov/veterans.

The Official Illinois Bicentennial Celebration will begin this December 3rd, 2017 with events in Springfield and Chicago. The celebration will continue with programs and events throughout 2018, ending with the Bicentennial Birthday Party on December 3rd, 2018 at the United Center. The HONOR 200 veterans will be recognized during the Birthday Gala. For information on the Bicentennial and to find out how your community can participate go to www.illinois200.gov.
