Here are a few strategies to give you a jumpstart on effective Chamber function networking.
Use Your Name Tag to Your Advantage… Always place your nametag on your right side. When you extend your hand for a handshake, the line of sight is to be on the other person’s right side.
Moving In… There is a difference between including yourself in other people’s conversations and intruding on them. Getting into a conversation that is already underway requires some sensitivity. Watch people’s body language and listen to their tone for clues. Approach groups of three or more and position yourself close to the group. When you feel yourself included, join in the conversation. Remember, be open to others who want in.
Consider the Buddy System… The buddy system can be a great way to work a room because you can introduce each other around. You may know people your buddy doesn’t know and vice versa. Just be sure to split up as soon as introductions have been made.
Keep Current with What’s Happening Locally… You can “network” more effectively if you’re in tune with the local business scene. The best way to do that is to read the Chamber newsletter, the local paper, and stay active in Chamber events and committees.
Bring Business Cards…Don’t be shy about offering your business card to a new acquaintance – and asking for his or her card in return. That’s why you’re here.
